baby maybe someday
May 31, 2004 A very disturbing story for my reading audience.

So, I have written two stories for this, a place where you take a song's lyrics and write a story about what you think they might mean.

What I noticed when I wrote the first story was that when I was writing, I tuned out all my other problems and just focused on writing. I forget sometimes that I actually possess the ability to write because I let long stretches go by without writing anything at all. Which is not good. But when I was writing this story tonight, I just let go and let my brain explode.

I'm not saying this is a good story, but it just felt good to write SOMETHING and write it so easily. And seriously, this weird-ass story really shows you what's going on in my head right now. I want to share it with you, my audience, because I'm kinda proud of the fact that I finally let go and wrote something. So, read it if you want. Woot.

So I opened WinAmp and clicked on a random song, and Devil Inside by INXS popped up. I'm in the mood to write a random story for no particular reason, so here we are! Yay.

"Devil Inside"

Here comes the woman

With the look in her eye

Raised on leather

With flesh on her mind

Words as weapons sharper than knives

Makes you wonder how the other half die

Other half die

Here come the man

With the look in his eye

Fed on nothing

But full of pride

Look at them go

Look at them kick

Makes you wonder how the other half live

The devil inside

The devil inside

Every single one of us the devil inside

The devil inside

The devil inside

Every single one of us the devil inside

Here come the world

With the look in its eye

Future uncertain but certainly slight

Look at the faces

Listen to the bells

It's hard to believe we need a place called hell

The two of them drove from city to city, racking up body counts as they passed through. You could tell just by looking at them that they were trouble. There was obviously no way they could be stopped.

They weren't a modern day Bonnie and Clyde. They were worse. They were so bad that the pigs (that's what the calle the Cops that were after them) didn't even know they were looking for a pair of serial killers, not just one.

Their given names were David and Rose, but those names were too common for such devilish souls. They renamed each other, taking the role of parents of a new-born baby, but with the worst of intentions. He lovingly referred to her as Agrona, named after the Brythonic goddess of war and death. And she called him Baby, just because of the irony.

Agrona and Baby travelled through the country, killing anyone who got in their way and some who didn't. It was just a game to them, although nobody ever won. They, of course, got off on these murders and always had ravenous sex to celebrate, but that was the only joyful outcome of these killings. There was nothing else.

They both had beginnings that were slightly less violent. Rose grew up in a nice baptist environment and was deeply loved by her mother. Her mom wanted nothing else but peace and happiness for her daughter, but the prick she married had other plans. By the time Rose was 12, she had enough of the obscenity that was her father. She wrote a note to her mother ("I love you, but I can't take it. If you know what's best, you'll kill yourself before it gets any worse for you. I know it's bad. Run.") She never did find out if her mom ran, but she always hoped she did.

As for David, he grew up in a completely happy home filled with love and homemade cooking. Until the fire, that is. The fire that completely engulfed their family home and left his mother, father, 2 brothers and sister burned to a crisp. He only managed to escape when a fireman spotted him beneath a chair and saved his life. Burns scarred half his body.

David met Rose, soon to be Agrona in his eyes, at a heavy metal concert in Albuquerque. He was there to find a girl, any girl, who was drunk enough to consider having sex with someone who was so badly scarred. So far, every girl he came in contact was disgusted by him. Except for Rose.

They stood side by side, listening to the music, drinking beer. When Rose's favorite song came on, she started headbanging and screaming the words. David had never met a woman who was quite so passionate about hard rock, so he was fascinated by Rose. He stared at her for a good 30 minutes until she turned around and screamed "Isn't this band the fucking greatest?" And it was all history after that.

At first it was just sex. Hardcore, crazy sex. Then they started opening up to each other. And then, one night, they lie in bed whispering their naughtiest, dirtiest fantasies. David expected Rose to spout off something about handcuffs or something else equally devious, but what she said was still music to his ears.

"I feel comfortable in telling you that I just want to kill people. I want to get a gun or a knife of just my hands and just start killing people. I have so much anger and hate inside me, David. I can't stand it. When I do eventually go to sleep at night, I dream about death. Blood. It.. it turns me on."

David was so turned on that he took her again, right there. After the violent sex ensued, he told her he had the same fantasies. The next day, they went to Wal-Mart and bought themselves a gun. That same day, the killed a homeless man in the alley of dive in Santa Fe. It sealed their love forever.

They had the devil inside them, David and Rose did. It might have stayed hidden if they never met, but a simple twist of fate made sure they did. God didn't exist in the world the day David and Rose met. And it would be a long time before He showed his face in public again.

After about 3 years of the random killing sprees, what became Baby and Agrona were looking to do something else with their lives. They didn't really know what they wanted to do, but they were tired of the randomness their lives entailed.

That's when they started attending church.

They weren't there for entirely purient reasons, of course. They wanted to target unsuspecting individuals and take them for all they were worth. Agrona and Baby had become tired of all the ritual killings; now they just wanted to become millionaires. They thought the best way to do this was to target churches in high-income areas. Their first choice was obviously Beverly Hills, California.

It was fun at first. They even made friends with the people at church, but they would quickly leave town after going on a couple of nightly breaking and entering binges. They collected a good amount of money for first-timers, and they were wondering what to do next.

One night, Agrona and Baby entered the wrong house.

They decided to go to the home of one Isabelle Davidson. They didn't know if Isabelle was home or not, but they didn't care. They knew she was one of the richest attenders of the church they were currently targeting, and that was all they were focused on.

They found their way into this luxorious home, and even these cold blooded killers were awed by Isabelle's huge mansion.

"So, this is how the other half lives?" Baby said.

"No, this is how WE live," Agrona snorted. "This is all going to be ours someday, Baby. We are going to live like this, and people will admire us, and we'll be rich, and we'll have a whole bunch of babies, and it will be good."

Baby was starting to see Agrona's motherly side more often lately. He didn't know whether he liked it or not. He loved Agrona, that was definitely true. But he wasn't sure that they would make the best parents. And the one secret that he hid from her was that he planned on dying young. He knew she wanted fame and fortune, but he had no reason to want any of that. His future was uncertain, and he wanted it that way.

While they were going through Isabelle's things in her kitchen, trying to find anything at all of worth, they heard something coming down the hall, and before they knew it, Isabelle turned the light on and was staring at them in contempt.

"What is going on here? Are you ingrates trying to rob me? I swear, if I weren't a Godly woman-" She stopped in mid-sentence and stared at these two young kids in her kitchen. The boy looked about 20 years old, with long straggly hair and a badly burned face. The girl was a skinny little thing, though not unattractive. She needed to shower and maybe a good facial, but she was okay-looking. Pretty, almost.

And then the lightbulb finally turned on in Isabelle's head.

"You two are from the church! Why are you in my kitchen?"

Rose, now just Rose instead of Agrona because she and David were in the presence of another, looked at David sharply. He had the gun. Why didn't he just take the gun out and shoot the bitch? But Rose had a knife. The kitchen was full of them. She could take matters into her own hands, but something held her back.

David just shrugged. He didn't know what to say. Suddenly, he was ashamed of his behavior. Maybe it was because Isabelle looked so much like his mother.

"I don't know, Ms. Warren. We're just trying to make a living, you know? Neither of us.. well, we don't know what else to do."

Rose was furious with this statement, but she didn't disagree. It was basically true, after all. The two of them didn't have any skills other than murder, sex, and burglery.

"Well, you just let God take care of that. Why haven't you put your trust in Him? He is there for you, David and Rose. He is. I know it might seem strange at first, but put your hand in His, and he will lead you."

David and Rose again shared a look, and then shrugged. They sat at the kitchen table and debated about God with Isabelle until the sun came up.

"Do you hear those bells?" Isabelle asked. The church was ringing their bell in the near distance.

Rose and David nodded.

"With sounds like that, it's hard to believe that there's anything like Hell. I imagine you two have been through it. Believe me, you can escape it. We all have. It's all due to God, Rose and David. It's all Him."

They nodded peacefully. But when the bells stopped ringing, and when the sun came up and lit their tired and weary faces, they were reminded of the life they came from and the life that they were almost tempted to deny themselves of, and the reality hit them.

They once again shared a look. Baby nodded at Rose, once again Agrona, and while Isabelle was in mid-sentence about the loving hand that God holds out to all his people, David shot her five times, at close range. Rose then took the gun from David's shaking hands and shot him in the head. She knew his secret wish of dying young.

She, however, still had plans for the world.
